chapter ten

“I’m a thorough researcher, Ms. McKay,” Robbie said as he began pointing out the names written in the records book. “I’ve been researching L.W. Wynsfield and Theodore Whitfield for many years. What I’m telling you isn’t some spur-of-the-moment deal.”

“I’m sure you are very thorough, Sheriff Pinski,” Patricia said as her mind collected all the facts he’d shared and placed them onto a confusing jigsaw table. “But before we go any further, you said I would understand why you’re so intent on arresting Samantha Garfield. Right now, I’m still a little confused. Is it because she’s related to Veronica Garfield?”

Robbie paused, stared off into distant memories for a few seconds, and then looked over at Patricia. “Veronica Garfield ended up marrying Gregory Rowers—”

“And Renee Rowers married David Stations.”

Robbie nodded. “Veronica Garfield divorced Gregory Rowers and remarried Benjamin Emerson. That’s what the records book shows, anyway. The strange thing is that Gregory Rowers vanished from the records book soon after the divorce; his marriage to Veronica Garfield only lasted a few months. The name Rowers doesn’t show back up in the town of Foggy Rocks until Lance Emerson died in the early 1900s, and his widow retook her maiden name. Why? I can’t say for sure… but I have an idea. I will say that during the time the name Rowers was missing, the Emersons controlled their land. In 1920, the land was given back to a man named William Rowers.”

Patricia considered the facts. “Perhaps it could be that Gregory Rowers became Benjamin Emerson?”

“That’s what I think,” Robbie confessed. “L.W. Wynsfield died soon after the Invisible Pirate was put to death. Veronica Garfield began keeping the records.”

“Now that’s very interesting.” Patricia watched Robbie flip through more pages of the records book. “Sheriff, your last name is Pinski,” she stated, leaving room for Robbie to swim out past the tide line.

Robbie stopped looking through the records book, grew silent for a moment, and raised his head. “Is it?” he asked, pained. “Ms. McKay, you know what path I’m running down here.”

“Yes, but the last name Whitfield is a far cry from the last name Pinski,” Patricia pointed out. “If you are related to Theodore Whitfield, we need proof.”

“And I have proof.” Robbie put down the records book. “Wynsfield left behind a journal. His journal was found washed up on the beach and in considerably poor condition, but whoever found the journal managed to salvage many pages.” He looked around the dusty room. “The journal was found in an old wooden box about ten years ago and given to my uncle once it was preserved. My uncle never told me who found the journal, but you can imagine his shock when he read the pages.”

“What facts were written inside the journal?”

Robbie braced himself. “L.W. Wynsfield was a Polish immigrant… and so was Theodore Whitfield. They were wanted thieves who managed to escape the noose. They were also brothers.”

Patricia felt the hair stand up on the back of her neck. “I see.”

“Wynsfield wrote that
